news 4 at 6:00 starts now. my office is posting a reward of $16 million. >> tonight upping the ante to find a former los angeles police officer still on the run and accused of hunting his former colleagues and their families. and in the northeast slow but steady progress as utility crews try to get power back on for hundreds of thousands buried by a blizzard. good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. those stories in a moment. first, a murder investigation under way tonight in prince george's county. the victim a 71-year-old woman

apparently attacked inside her home. darcy spencer is live in capitol heights tonight where police were canvassing the neighborhood this afternoon. >> reporter: i was able to talk to several maybes here in this community today. they all tell me that the victim was a nice woman. she was a kind woman. she lived right here in this house. she had trouble walking so she used a ramp here, and all these neighbors are struggling to understand how and why someone could kill her. >> we all look out for each other here in this neighborhood. i have been here ten years, and i have never heard anything like this happening before. >> reporter: this woman brought to tears as she talked about the death of her neighbor, geraldine joyce mcintyre. the disabled woman lived for 71 years. that life came to a tragic end saturday. that's when police found her hurt in her capitol heights home. she died at a hospital later that day. >> scary to not be comfortable

where you live. and to know that it could happen so close. i feel sorry for the family. >> reporter: today prince george's county homicide detectives returned to chapel oaks drive. they're handing out flyers trying to get information, trying to figure out who would kill this elderly woman and why. >> it's heartless people today and i can't imagine who would do something like that or why. >> reporter: police say they got a call saturday to check on mcintyre and that's when they found her. they say she had trauma to her body, but they're not saying exactly how she was killed. >> at this time that's under investigation as to whether there was any forced entry or whether, you know, the incident took place in the home, whether that person was let in or what it could possibly be. >> reporter: neighbors tell me mcintyre lived her with her daughter and they're both disabled. and that's why there's a ramp here at their home. >> i don't like to lock my doors all the time, and now i feel i have to lock them day and night.

>> reporter: and we heard that from several residents here this afternoon, particularly women who are now concerned about their safety. this is one of the flyers. these were distributed here in the neighborhood with the victim's picture up front. $25,000 in reward money being offered to help find her killer. reporting live from capitol heights, darcy spencer, news4. now to digging out. day two across new york and most of new england. this 27-mile stretch of the long island expressway had to be shut down early this morning so that convoy of trucks and plows to try to finally make pa passable. side streets are still buried. parts of long island so more than two feet of snow and power outages still a big problem across that part of the country. utility companies estimate more than 270,000 customers still in the dark as of about an hour ago. that's down from more than 6050,000 at the height of the storm.

some good news for airlines. most say they're operating at an almost normal schedule today with only a few hundred flights canceled. amtrak trains between new york and boston are still on a limited schedule today, and children in boston, they're going to get a long weekend. schools closed there tomorrow. president obama has officially declared a state of emergency in connecticut. towns and cities across that state saw some of the highest snow totals from the blizzard. as jolene king reports, some neighbors are still waiting to be plowed out while others are making progress digging out. >> reporter: i'm actually standing up here on a 20-foot snowbank which is a common sight to see here in waterbury where snowplows have been working overtime to clear the roads. a lot of are frustration is also coming from ris dents who are still on residential streets unable to get plowed out and they're totally snowed in. health care workers are having issues getting to patients who are confined to their homes, and

people are still unable to drive on roads to get groceries and to get to work. so governor malloy says it may take up to ten days for connecticut roads to get back to normal, and as you can see, the sun is shining here in connecticut today, but tomorrow it could get even more complicated. it's scheduled to rain. reporting in danbury, connecticut, i'm jolene kent for nbc news. >> time for a look at our forecast now with storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell, and, chuck, we're still keeping an eye on tomorrow morning's commute, right? >> yes, indeed, jim. we've had a beautiful sunday afternoon filled with sunshine. now the clouds have started to roll back in. to our seth and west a band of rain showers. the steadiest of the rain is still about eight hours or so away from here. that means it's arriving in the met metro area after midnight. as the run runs further and further north there's a possibility for some freezing rain for our friends in pennsylvania. not much of a freezing rain

threat in and around town. temperatures, which are in the low 40s now, dropping back down into the upper 30s under increasingly cloudy skies. maybe a spotty shower out to the south and west by 11:00. talk more about your monday and the week ahead in just a few. >> see you then, chuck. thanks. developing at this hour, los angeles police offering a $1 million reward for information leading to the arrest of christopher dorner. the manhunt is under way for the ex-cop who police say killed three people as revenge for those he blames for ending his career. during a news conference a short time ago, l.a.'s police chief emphasized the threat he believes dorner poses. >> this is the largest local reward ever auoffered to our knowledge. some may ask why so large? this is an act, and make no mistake about it, of domestic terrorism. >> new surveillance video shows a man police believe to be

dorner throwing items into a dumpster near san diego last week. crews are still searching big bear where dorner's burned out truck was found. investigators say they found camping equipment and weapons inside the truck. senator lindsey graham is threatening to block the confirmation of president obama's defense and cia nominees. the south carolina republican says he wants more answers about the deadly september 11th attack in benghazi libya. senator graham says he'll hold up the nominations of chuck hagel as defense secretary and john brennan as cia director until he gets more information. just two days away from president obama's state of the union address. the economy and job creation are expected to take center stage in the annual speech. today on "meet the press" congressional leaders from both parties said they're anxious to hear what the president has to say about the looming sequester. >> the president believes and i

agree within tax reform we can find additional savings over the next ten years. use that to move toward deficit reduction and still keep this economy moving forward. >> i want reductions in spending that make sense. these indiscriminate reductions do not make sense, and we're going to hurt a lot of people. >> president obama added a third stop in his post-state of the union tour. he's going to travel to chicago, north carolina, and georgia to discuss proposals unveiled in his speech on tuesday. his speech on tuesday. the familmy bad.

happening now in chicago, police are talking with two so-called persons of interest in connection with the death of 15-year-oldh adiya pendleton. she was shot and killed just days after taking part in events surrounding president obama's inauguration in d.c. first lady michelle obama attended her funeral in chicago yesterday. the two people are being questioned but they have not yet been charged. a new report out tonight from the family of joe paterno challenges the findings of a report last year that led to unprecedented ncaa sanctions against penn state. former fbi director louis frees' report claimed paterno and other officials covered up allegations of sex abuse by jerry sandusky. the paterno report says those claims are unfounded and there's no hard evidence that joe paterno ever told anyone not to

report sandusky's actions. it also points out that he did not interview paterno or other administrators accused in the cover-up. tonight at 11:00, we will talk to dick thornburg, one of the experts assembled by the paterno family to put the report together. a church in anne arundel county left out in the cold by thieves. we'll tell you what they took and why the chump is left with a hefty bill for repairs. and chuck tracking rain tomorrow and a system that could bring some trouble.

big celebration in chinatown for lunar new year. 4711, the district holding its annual parade today. this year the year of the snake. it occupies the sixth position in the chinese zodiac and it symbolizes intelligence, gracefulness, and materialism. hundreds took part in banquets at strants throughout the district. some bold thieves made off with crucial items from a church in our area and police are trying to figure out who is responsible. the case has literally put a chill on the congregation. >> reporter: there's a warmth in the souls of the gathered faithful here in the sanctuary of gloria day lutheran church in maryland. lately there's been a chill in the fellowship hall because somebody stole the heat pumps from out back. cut the wires and piping, lifted

them joen to a truck and made off. it happened two weeks ago. >> we are making do. it was a tragic loss to us, the church, and the community. >> reporter: even when the church is not in session, there are scout meetings, preschool classes, al-anon, and nary-anon meeting. >> this is a very nice church. >> kathy attends jazzercise classes here. >> it's a little cold but we make do. >> reporter: making do will mean making up for the loss financially. there's a bake sale. that will help. >> we don't have a bake sale yet. it's going to be at least five figures. >> reporter: that's a lot of sweets to be sold. >> we're more concerned with the people that took our heat pumps. something in their lives is going wrong. >> reporter: there's the emergency heat that at least keeps this part of the church habitable but it's also the most expensive. >> we're managing. >> reporter: this church and perhaps even this community has been victimized by criminals, but in the true spirit of the

church and what it stands for, they're taking a certain position on this that is heartwarming, even if it's a little colder inside than it needs to be. >> derek word, news4. well, they're going to be fortunate in that the temperatures will be spring-like, right? >> big shot of warm air coming our way for tomorrow. it isn't going to last all week but tomorrow afternoon promises to be mild one around her following some rain drops and a very active weather pattern coming up. another chance for rain, maybe a snowflake midweek and then real cold air coming our way by next weekend. outside for now, what a nice day it turned into. a bright blue sky early this morning. we did see an increasing cloud cover as the afternoon into the early evening hours wore along, but no rain drops just yet. we were able to squeak out another dry day here on our weekend. our high temperature today, 49 degrees after a 39 degree -- 34

degree start this morning. and temperatures in the low 40s out there. if you go over to graphics 22 it seems like we're having a hard time here on this graphic. let's see if we can make this happen here. it's changing on one map. so our graphics -- 29 -- try graphics 29. here is 29. 43 degrees in town right now. not much on the radar at this point in time so that's definitely welcome news. we will be dry for the rest of your sunday evening into your early parts of your sunday night but as you can see, there's a lot of moisture out to our south and west. this is, indeed, going to be coming in our direction so rain drops are in the forecast for your commute to work and school tomorrow. it's not a lot of rain associated with that system so as a result it's not going to rain all day. rain in the morning up to about lunchtime and then things will start to quiet down after that. future weather forecast here, let's try to go back over to graphics 22 and see if we can get our seven-day forecast. we'll just go with the seven-day forecast. monday, this is also the wrong

carol is here now with more on the border battle. >> you know, and it was at maryland, virginia at maryland, and usually in the acc basketball play the home team has the advantage. maryland was 14-1 at the comcast center before today, right? but you know what number really jumps off that stat sheet? alex lenz's field goal percentage. 3 of 6 today. 3 of 6. maryland's seven-footer only took six shots today. got to give virginia credit for double-teaming him all over the court. the terps came out fired up, but it was a tough night from the start. thanks in large part to uva freshman justin anderson.

the montrose christian product initially committed to north dakota but switched to virginia once gary williams retired. 14 of his career high 17 points coming in the first half helped them take a six-point lead at the break. second half, nick faust, well, he turned the ball over. it's joe harris going the other way. he was a thorn in maryland's side all day. dribbles into the paint and knocks down two of his game hi 22 points. the coach not pleased and you know who he takes it off on? his sport coat. under ten minutes to play, they're down 11, howard from the corner. hey, we're about a three ball. up ten with 2:15 to go. his fourth three of the game. they shoot 58% from behind the earthquake. the virginia calve leers win 80-69. justin anderson talked about getting booed at the comcast

center. >> i honestly forgot where i was once the ball went up. the fans started chanting and all i could hear was one big roar. they had a great energy in here tonight. you can't do anything but respect it. they want their team to win. they're not going to come in and applaud us. we stayed together. we fought until the end. that was big time for us. >> we were a half step slow. i thought they were real physical and held their boxouts. we didn't handle the physicality early very well, and it was their day. it was their day. it definitely wasn't ours. >> well, easily the craziest game of the year last night, louisville at notre dame. final seconds of regulation. irish down three. the bucket and the foul. that ties it at 60. 12 points and 44 seconds for grant, sends it to overtime but it's just getting started. in the fourth o.t., irish down two, eric at kins loses it.

zach august, he saves it but misses it. sherman gets it to go. 17 points for sherman all in overtime and we're headed to a fifth o.t. in the fifth overtime tied at 100, atkins splits the "d." he played 60 minutes in the game. notre dame holds and and they storm the court after winning in a five overtime thrilling, 104-101. almost as exciting last night at the verizon center. one day after george mcphee said he was not going to, quote, blow anything up, the washington capitals explode on their own. it was an offensive explosion. the caps tally five goals against the panthers and they get to go along with a stellar performance in net from holtby. holtby had been called out ahead of time for needing to play better. now the folks are saying he couldn't have played any better. check out the panthers two-on-one break away and holtby denies.

one of 27 saves. second period caps up 1-0. check out holtby's pass up ice to brower who takes advantage. the second goal for brower last night. give that assist to the caps goalie. third period off the face off, alex ovechkin with his first even-strength goal of the year puts the caps up 4-0, and they add another one. they get to celebrate, 5-0 the final. afterwards eastern talking about holtby's helper. >> he looked quiet back there which is good for goalie and he made the best pass i have ever made to brower. when a goalie makes a better pass than you, you know he's on his game. >> that's one of the harder passes i have seen up the ice. he's been unbelievable. you know, it's good for him, good confidence booster not just for him but all of us. >> he mofts the puck as well as any goalie. he worked hard on it and to be able to see me at the far blue line and make such a good pass, it was good to see.

when a sporting event invites live animals, you have a lot of potential for a worst case scenario moment and that's what we get when a minor league hockey team invites a live condor to inspire the bakersfield con dor. instead it terrifies them. before the game against las vegas. the real condor came out for the national anthem. this bird decided to fly the coop. the handler loses the condor. the handler slips himself. the bird then takes off again, heads towards the benches. luckily no players were harmed. these are the tough guys, too. the condor decided to hit the showers a little early and the game announcers of course said, well, that didn't go as planned. >> that was a great idea. >> a couple of youtube moments. we had one earlier from chuck. >> i had the condor in the weather office earlier and apparently that didn't go so well. >> it's all better now.
